MULTI-PURPOSE EXPLORATORY TOOLS
The Tall Walking Picks, Standard Walking Picks, Cane Picks and Viking Mattocks are four-way digging tools, functioning as an archaeological pick, hoe, rake, and light-duty pry bar. The Cane Picks and the Tall and Standard Walking Picks also function as practical walking sticks when hiking the countryside. When not at the dig site, the Walking Picks, Cane Picks and Viking Mattocks can be put to practical and long-lasting horticultural use when landscaping, or when planting and maintaining a garden.

Tall Walking Pick — Four Hoe Width Choices
The Tall Walking Pick is ergonomically designed for people taller than six feet (183cm). The extra length (overall tool length is 61", 155cm) can help reduce back strain experienced by tall people when using hoes designed for shorter people. This tool eliminates the need for a tall person to bend over further than necessary when using the tool.
The Tall Walking Pick No. T-550 (hoe width 2-5/32", 55mm) is only efficient when working in soft soils. The Tall Walking Pick No. T-450 (hoe width 1-3/4", 45mm) is a good compromise for working in both hard and soft ground. The Tall Walking Pick No. T-400 (hoe width 1-9/16", 40mm) and the No. T-360 (hoe width 1-7/16", 36mm) are best used in hard conglomerate and/or compacted soil that requires a sharp pick point to cut into the surface and work efficiently through rocky ground composed of compacted pebbles and gravel.

Standard Walking Pick — Four Hoe Width Choices
The Standard Walking Pick is ergonomically designed for people between five and six feet tall (152cm to 183cm) and is the right height for comfortable use as both a hoe and a hiking stick. The Standard Walking Pick's overall length (51", 130cm) reduces the hazard of accidentally hitting yourself in the head with the hardened and relatively sharp pick while using the tool as a walking stick. Ideally, the cutting edges of the pick should be at shoulder height or below when walking, safely below eye level.
The large hoe and pick point size of the Standard Walking Pick No. S-550 (hoe width 2-5/32", 55mm) works best in soft soils. The Standard Walking Pick No. S-450 (hoe width 1-3/4", 45mm) works well in both hard and soft soils, and the Standard Walking Pick No. S-400 (hoe width 1-9/16", 40mm) and the No. S-360 (hoe width 1-7/16", 36mm) work best in hard soils because of their narrow hoes and sharper pick points.

Cane Pick — Four Hoe Width Choices
The Cane Pick is the same length as a traditional gentleman's cane. Useful for those who always get close to what they're examining, yet like to stroll along in style between site explorations. The 36" (91cm) length also makes the Cane Pick easier to transport when traveling than the Tall or Standard Walking Pick versions. The hardened and polished stainless steel pick head makes a comfortable and stylish hand grip when walking in either the countryside or through a fashionable urban environment.
The broader hoe width and larger pick point of the Cane Pick No. C-550 (hoe width 2-5/32", 55mm) works best in soft soils. The No. C-450 (hoe width 1-3/4", 45mm) works well in both soft and hard soils, and the No. C-400 (hoe width 1-9/16", 40mm) and No. C-360 (hoe width 1-7/16", 36mm) work best in hard soils or in situations where careful excavation is required. All sizes fall readily to hand when using the tool as a walking cane.

Viking Mattock — Four Hoe Width Choices
The Viking Mattock is short and stout. When the digging is up close and personal this 18" (45cm) long tool allows two-handed use and works well in tight locations, or when a lot of overburden has to go fast, but you want to keep a close eye on what’s being thrown aside as the overburden is removed. The lightweight aluminum probe/pry bar helps remove anything hindering progress. The Viking Mattock is easily carried in a clothing belt loop when not in use.
For loose soil the Viking Mattock No. V-550 works fastest because of its wide hoe width (2-5/32", 55mm). The No. V-450 works well in both soft and hard soils (hoe width 1-3/4", 45mm), and the Viking Mattock No. V-400 (hoe width 1-9/16", 40mm) and No. V-360 (hoe width 1-7/16", 36mm) work best in hard soils where their narrow pick points and hoe widths make them efficient at penetrating hard ground, but less efficient at removing the loosened soil.
